Periodontal Services

Your initial appointment will consist of a comprehensive oral examination.   Dr. Folson will review your health history and obtain periodontal probe scores by measuring the “pockets” around your teeth.   Periodontal (gum) disease is caused by bacterial plaque on the root surfaces.   If left untreated, periodontal disease (periodontitis) can lead to inflamed gums, bad breath, bone loss, loose teeth and even tooth loss.   In addition, a complete series of digital radiographs may be taken at your initial visit.   Accordingly, Dr. Folson will formulate a diagnosis, prognosis and treatment plan for you.   Financial arrangements will also be discussed.  Our office participates in most Delta Dental Plans and will gladly assist you in submitting dental insurance claims.  Our fees are reasonable and payment plans are available without interest.   Serving you, the patient, with quality and affordable dental care is our primary goal.

The following periodontal procedures are performed in our office:

Scaling and Root Planing (SRP):

The nonsurgical removal of plaque and calculus (tartar) from the teeth.   Root planing involves meticulous removal of mineralized calculus deposits from below the gumline.   SRP is performed by highly trained dental hygienists using specialized instruments.  Multiple appointments are usually required for SRP.  The treated quadrant(s) may also be irrigated with an antimicrobial agent as an adjunct to SRP.

Effective oral hygiene is essential to the outcome of periodontal and implant surgical treatment.  Dr. Folson and his team spend considerable time educating our patients and demonstrating useful oral hygiene techniques during all phases of treatment.

It is important to note that lasers are not the standard of care for the treatment of periodontitis. Research studies of the treatment of periodontal disease with lasers have not shown to be consistently significant.   As a result, lasers are presently considered experimental, unpredictable and costly compared to conventional periodontal treatment modalities.

Surgical Periodontal Treatment:

Periodontal surgery may be necessary to manage moderate to severe periodontitis.  This includes pocket reduction with or without bone grafting.   All surgical procedures are performed by Dr. Folson. It can be done predictably with local anesthesia only.  In addition, preoperative oral sedation is an option for apprehensive patients at no additional fee.

In many cases, gum surgery can be deferred or avoided if the patient is referred to Dr. Folson in a timely manner.

Aesthetic Surgical Treatment (Cosmetic Dentistry):

To improve aesthetics due to a “gummy smile” or uneven gumline.   Cosmetic periodontal surgery also includes gum grafting or augmentation to cover an exposed root surface that is prone to root decay and/or sensitivity.

Surgical Clinical Crown Lengthening:

This procedure is necessary to obtain adequate sound tooth structure prior to capping or crowning a tooth.  Decay, fracture of a tooth, removal of an old restoration or excessive wear of the biting surface of a tooth may result in insufficient clinical crown length or tooth volume.  Crown lengthening involves the surgical reflection of gum tissue flaps and bony recontouring.  Dr. Folson is very skilled and experienced in this surgical procedure.  It can be done predictably with local anesthesia only. In addition, preoperative oral sedation is an option for apprehensive patients for an additional fee.

Dental Implants:

Dr. Folson is an experienced dental implant surgeon. A dental implant is a titanium alloy screw that can safely and predictably be placed in the jawbone to replace a missing tooth.  If indicated, multiple implants can be utilized to replace several teeth or to secure a loose removable denture.   The implant serves as the root portion to support the abutment and cap or crown placed by your general or restorative dentist.  It is now accepted that a dental implant is often the most conservative treatment for tooth replacement.

Dental implants preserve the supporting bone and are an excellent alternative to fixed bridgework and removable partial dentures.  Dr. Folson has placed root form implants since 1991 with a success rate of 98%.  Pre-operative planning, bone quality and quantity, and surgical technique are key factors for optimal results.  In many cases, the implant can be placed immediately after the extraction of a hopeless tooth.  In addition, a special computerized CT scan may be necessary to properly assess your anatomical structures.   If so, this can be done safely, conveniently and affordably so as to provide Dr. Folson with more complete diagnostic information.  In summary, dental implants are predictable, cosmetic and can last a lifetime.

Periodontal Maintenance

Regardless of the treatment received from Dr. Folson, ongoing periodontal maintenance is crucial to maintain your teeth and dental implants. Upon completion of active treatment, Dr. Folson will recommend an appropriate periodontal recall schedule to alternate with your general dentist. Typically, 3-4 month intervals are recommended. Periodontal maintenance is essential to long term oral health.

Second Opinions

Many patients are referred to Dr. Folson for second opinions.  Frequently he can offer more conservative and less costly treatment options for patients with medical and financial concerns. In many cases, gum surgery can be deferred or avoided if the patient is referred to Dr. Folson in a timely manner.
